Elemental Analysis Facilities at the University of Florida Department of Geological Sciences
Grad student Jason Curtis engages in what is apparently one of his favorite pastimes: using the Perkin-Elmer atomic absorption spectrometer equipped with graphite furnace.
Grad student Matt Smith uses the ARL 8420 X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. This instrument is used for analysis of major and trace elements in solid samples such as fused beads and pressed rock powder pellets.
Assistant Professor Jon Martin explains the workings of the Dionex ion chromatograph to young Eric Martin. The ion chromatograph is used to measure concentrations of halogens, alkali metals, alkaline earths, and transition metals in solution.
