I am a limnologist and paleolimnologist with
special interests in tropical and subtropical lakes and watersheds. I
use sediment cores from the bottoms of lakes and wetlands to
reconstruct the history of aquatic ecosystems and their drainage
basins. These sediment profiles contain information on past climate
change and human-mediated impacts on the environment. My research has
taken me to many interesting areas in Mexico, Guatemala, Panama,
Venezuela, Bolivia, the Galapagos Islands, Haiti, the Dominican
Republic, China, Cambodia, and of course, Florida. Each summer I
coordinate a UF International Studies Program on the ecology of the
Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. I presently serve as the Director of the
Land Use and Environmental Change Institute (LUECI), a UF Center that
fosters interdisciplinary research on the environment. When not doing
field or lab work, I can be found in music venues looking for
“alternative” tunes. I also a collect folk art, including textiles,
wood carvings, ceramics, baskets, and masks. |
